Temporary exhibits and cultural displays in the terminal
Indiana artists, cultural institutions and organizations, and civic groups may submit proposals for temporary exhibits and displays in the airport terminal. The exhibits, which may be displayed for as little as six weeks or up to 12 months, should reflect themes of art, history, culture, and/or local interest. Exhibits must be durable, low-maintenance and suitable in form, material, and content for an all-ages audience that includes families and young children.
- For more information about having a temporary display at Indianapolis International Airport, including proposal submission guidelines, eligibility criteria, and display policies, please review the Request for Proposals (PDF).
History of the airport art program
The Indianapolis Airport Authority’s art program began in 2005, when requests for proposals for public art in the new Indianapolis International Airport were issued. From an initial pool of more than 550 applicants from the U.S. and several foreign nations, the authority selected a number of site-specific, architecturally integrated, and state-alone works of art for what would become the Col. H. Weir Cook Memorial Terminal Building.
Seemingly disparate, the pieces all share similar themes—those of flight, nature, changing seasons, and unique features of Central Indiana culture. Comprising an array of artistic media, techniques, and talents, they are further intended to serve as a visual “gateway” to the City of Indianapolis, introducing the city’s history and heritage to visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
The artists and their work
The 15 artists and six poets, selected through an extensive review process, have an array of backgrounds and experience in creating public art. Several of them reside in Indiana or have Indiana ties.

The Indianapolis Airport Authority does not offer formal, guided tours related to the airport's art. Those interested in viewing specific artworks in public areas of the airport (i.e., those not in secure areas requiring a ticket and boarding pass) are welcome. Art foundation
To ensure public art is always an important part of the airport experience in the City of Indianapolis, the non-profit IND Foundation has been established to care for and maintain current and future permanent works of art at Indianapolis International Airport. Under direction from the Indianapolis Airport Authority, the foundation will select and commission new works and will facilitate and support temporary rotating exhibits, cultural displays, and performances. Contributions are tax-deductible and welcome.
